Our flagship memory foam mattress –

Memory foam – a brief review

Memory foam was originally designed for the NASA space program to alleviate the immense pressures placed on astronauts in take off and re-entry but was never actually used in any mission. It has unique properties in absorbing downward pressure where as springs apply upward pressure this is a fundamental difference.

Polyurethane foam and spring mattresses apply upward pressure and an object will bounce off it if dropped. Memory foam using downward pressure will absorb the object and will not bounce.

It meets at every point of contact and moulds itself to your body shape and sleeping position as well as matching your body temperature feeling firm when not sleeping in it and softer when warmed by the body.

In the rest of Europe memory foam mattress use is up to 80% in the UK about 15% but growing quickly we are well behind what is obvious to others.

If you have tried a memory foam mattress and found fault either feeling like you are in a jelly mould and waiting for the foam to change shape or it feels clammy and hot then read on there are 2 reasons for this.

1. Jelly mould - This is down to the density or the firmness of the memory foam get over 45kg per cubic metre and this is removed our Imperial is 55KG per cubic metre!

2. Hot and clammy - This is due to memory foam not dissipating moisture the imperial mattress uses 'open celled' memory foam which breathes. Also we use carefully chosen fillings ontop of the memory foam to dissipate moisture further giving a cool and pleasant sleep experience.

Note - do not use a mattress topper on memory foam unless manufactured specifically for memory foam mattresses as it will insulate you from the foam which is heat responsive.

Every memory foam mattress uses a foam base (not memory foam) and offers more general support. This is why we have chosen to combine the individual support of 1400 air sealed pocket sprung mattress with high specification memory foam.

You are best avoiding low density memory foam as they contain more air and less ‘memory’ and will break down more quickly. Memory foam in the UK is measured in KG per cubic metre. They generally start at 35KG per cubic metre to 70KG per cubic metre and will vary in depth used from 30mm in toppers and cheaper memory foam mattresses to 60mm

Our ‘Imperial’ mattress uses 55 KG per cubic metre
